The National Farmers' Federation Nepal drew the government's attention to the damages the unseasonal rains caused across the country to the rice crop, demanding immediate relief and compensation. The Federation President Panchakaji Shrestha states in a statement that the continuous unseasonal rains of the last three to four days have affected the rice crop a lot during the harvest period.
The rice that was dried in the fields and was prepared to be harvested has also been damaged. And in many places, the rice fell into the ground and rotted in the field. The Federation has estimated, based on information received from Terai and mid-hilly areas, that the production will be damaged by about 10-15 percent.
Similarly, the statement states that there was a delay in planting due to insufficient rainfall in Asar-Shrawan and the heavy rains that have come at the time of harvesting have caused widespread damage in the rice fields. The Federation has expressed its sorrow over the loss of production caused by natural disasters and has strongly demanded immediate relief and compensation by collecting actual data.
The Federation drew attention towards the need for a long-term solution by focusing on the reality of recurring disasters: the failure to plant crops due to lack of timely rain, or failure to bring in crops due to unseasonal rains, climate change-induced disasters, floods, landslides, and inundation.
It has been demanded that, recognizing that agriculture and farmers are the main sector of the economy that is most affected by such disasters, the state should invest in preparing necessary preparedness plans to avoid natural disasters and adopt measures to reduce the damage.
